Part of the research team of the project participated in various dialogues and presentations during the POLLEN Lima 2024 event held at PUCP on June 10th, 11th, and 12th.
Project researcher Anke Kaulard delivered a presentation at the POLLEN 2024 event on political ecologies. Additionally, the event featured the participation of principal investigator Maritza Paredes.
Kaulard's presentation examined how global norms, such as the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR), interact with the reterritorialization of sustainability governance, with a particular focus on the Peruvian Amazon and its political and environmental implications. This study is crucial for understanding the challenges and opportunities arising from the implementation of extraterritorial regulations in countries like Peru.
Specifically, the study is being conducted in the San Martín region, where territorial coalitions have been promoting sustainable production for years. The presentation analyzed the potential effects of the EUDR in the San Martín region, covering market incentives and sanctions, capacity building, governance institutions strengthening, and coalition building. It underscores the importance of recognizing the voices of diverse actors, from indigenous organizations to public officials and export associations.
Anke Kaulard's presentation focused on the interaction between foreign corporate responsibility and reterritorialized sustainability governance, specifically in commodity supply chains such as cocoa and coffee in Peru.
Maritza Paredes moderated the opening panel and also commented on Panel 21: "New Perspectives on Mining Extractivism in Peru II."
This panel addresses institutional transformations generated by the expansion of the extractive industry, from the local to the international level. It discusses how these transformations redefine social relationships and examines the interaction between formal governance mechanisms and everyday dynamics.
It discusses how these transformations redefine social relationships and examines the interaction between formal governance mechanisms and everyday dynamics.
In that regard, it analyzes how official government rules relate to daily activities that go beyond those norms, as well as the socio-ecological conflicts that arise and negotiations with companies that extract resources.
