On Friday, June 28, 2024, at Hotel Casa de Ávila in Arequipa, a sub-national workshop focused on preliminary research findings regarding the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in conservation management was held.
The event, which aimed to discuss the challenges of including Indigenous Peoples at regional and national levels, provided a significant space for reflecting on coordination across different scales, including the Indigenous Peoples' Platform to address Climate Change (PPICC). Maritza Paredes, Anke Kaulard, Danitza Gil, and Luciana Zunino facilitated the workshop on behalf of the Indigenous Visions for Climate Justice project at PUCP. This project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The workshop received support and collaboration from the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) and the NGO Descosur.
The event featured participation from the following indigenous and peasant organizations: National Organization of Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Women of Peru (ONAMIAP), National Federation of Peasant, Artisanal, Indigenous, Native, and Wage-Earning Women of Peru (FENMUCARINAP), National Agrarian Confederation (CNA), Peruvian Peasant Confederation (CCP), National Union of Aymara Communities (UNCA) and the Federation of Kechua Indigenous Peoples Chazuta Amazonas (FEPIKECHA). Also present were women from the water organization Sinchi Warmi, as well as community members from the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Natural Reserve (RNSAB), along with personnel from the National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State (SERNANP).
The workshop stood out for providing a space for constructive dialogue by presenting the findings of the PUCP team's research, enriched by the contributions of the attendees. Across different tables, discussions focused on the results regarding participation. Specifically, topics included participation in the management of the reserve, as well as economic and productive participation, particularly in the management of vicuña and water resources.
Subsequently, the national organizations shared their experiences with the Indigenous Peoples' Platform against Climate Change (PPICC), and discussions were held on opportunities for decentralized regional platforms.
