"Indigenous Visions for Climate Justice" will conduct a subnational workshop with indigenous organizations in Lamas

Cusco, October 30, 2023 - During the XXV International Congress of the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Funds Network (RedLAC), held from October 23 to 26 in the city of Cusco, two researchers from the "Indigenous Visions for Climate Justice" project at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) presented criteria for working on climate financing with indigenous organizations, in preparation for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. Maritza Paredes, principal researcher at the Department of Social Sciences of PUCP and general coordinator of the project, participated in the panel "Challenges for the Implementation of Impact Assessment in Environmental Projects". Under the moderation of Juana Kuramoto, Head of the Research and Development Office of Profonanpe, Paredes presented her project, focused on the participation of Indigenous Peoples in Peru's climate policies, particularly in the Amazon. The research led by Paredes aims to examine how the voices and contributions of Indigenous Peoples have been integrated into climate policies, focusing on their participation at national and subnational levels. Their participation in the Congress marked a crucial step towards the visibility of these perspectives internationally. Maritza Paredes and Danitza Gil, co-researcher of the project, also actively participated in key sessions organized on indigenous peoples, contributing to strengthening the agenda of Indigenous Peoples to achieve more effective participation of their organizations in the implementation of climate change financing and contribute to biodiversity loss in the Latin American region. The event, which brought together more than 350 experts from 27 countries, is considered a fundamental precursor to COP28, providing a space for the exchange of ideas and solutions that will enrich discussions on climate justice at the upcoming UN conference.

This workshop aims to provide a space for reflection on the relationships between the State and indigenous peoples regarding climate change governance. Additionally, it seeks to conduct a preliminary presentation of the Indigenous Climate Change Platform.

The participation of approximately 35 people is expected, including representatives from indigenous organizations such as CODEPISAM, federations (CEPKA, FEPIKECHA, FEPIKBHSAM, FEPIKRESAM), regional and local government officials, members of NGOs, and community members from the locality.
